Glycerin (Glycerol) - Uses, Dose, Side effects, MOA, Brands

Glycerin is a colorless viscous liquid that has antimicrobial and moisturizing properties. It is used for the treatment of dry skin, burns, and wounds. It also has osmotic dehydrating properties and is used in the treatment of constipation.

Glycerin Uses:

  • Constipation:

    • It is used to relieve occasional constipation.
  • Mouth and throat irritation:

    • It is used for the temporary relief of minor discomfort and protection of irritated areas in the sore throat and sore mouth.

Glycerin Dose in Adults

Glycerin Dose in the treatment of Constipation:

  • Rectal:
    • One adult suppository once a day as needed or as directed

Glycerin Dose in the treatment of Mouth and throat irritation:

  • Oral: Apply a one-inch strip directly to the tongue and oral cavity as needed

Glycerin Dose in Childrens

Glycerin Dose in the treatment of Fecal impaction, rapid disempaction: Rectal:

  • Infants and Children <2 years:

    • Suppository: 1 pediatric suppository once as needed.

Glycerin Dose in the treatment of Constipation: Rectal: Suppository:

  • Children 2 to 5 years:

    • 1 pediatric suppository once a day as needed or as directed
  • Children ≥6 years and Adolescents:

    • 1 adult suppository once a day as needed or as directed

Glycerin Dose in the treatment of Mouth/throat irritation: Oral: Oral gel:

  • Children ≥2 years and Adolescents:

    • Apply a 1-inch strip directly to the tongue and oral cavity as needed.

Glycerin Pregnancy Category: C

  • Pregnancy is safe for glycerin suppositories. There is not much data so be cautious.
  • You can use it for constipation or to treat nipple cracks while breastfeeding. However, you must apply the topical cream after breastfeeding.

Dose in Kidney disease:

No dosage adjustment recommended.

Dose in Liver disease:

No dosage adjustment recommended.

Side effects of Glycerin:

  • Gastrointestinal:

    • Abdominal cramps
    • Rectal irritation
    • Tenesmus

Contraindications to Glycerin:

In the following circumstances, it should not be used:

  • Patients who are bleeding per rectum must avoid rectal suppositories.
  • Patients suffering from intestinal obstruction.

It is best to avoid prolonged use of laxatives.

Monitoring parameters:

Monitor the response. Observe the patient for abdominal pain, cramps, and dehydration.

How to administer Glycerin?

Oral:

  • Apply the oral gel to the tongue and around inside and outside of tooth and gum surfaces. Do not rinse out.

Rectal:

  • Insert the suppository high in the rectum and retain it for about 15 minutes. The suppository does not need to melt to produce a response.

Mechanism of action of Glycerin:

  • It's an osmotic drying agent, which increases the intestinal osmotic pressure.
  • This causes fluid to be drawn into the colon and stimulates gut evacuation.

Absorption:

  • Rectal: Poorly absorbed
