Hydrogen Peroxide Antiseptic Solution - For Skin and Oral Cavity

Hydrogen Peroxide antiseptic solution is used to cleanse wounds, minor cuts, and abrasions. It is also used as an oral gel or a mouth wash to remove oral secretions and treat lesions in the oral cavity.

Hydrogen peroxide Antiseptic Solution Uses:

  • As an antiseptic for minor dermal abrasions:

    • It may be used to cleanse wounds, local infections, and suppurating ulcers.
    • It may be used to treat inflammatory conditions of the external auditory canal.
  • Mouth, gum, or dental irritation and for the removal of oral secretions:

    • Hydrogen peroxide may be used as a mouthwash or gargle.
  • Seborrheic keratosis (topical solution 40% only):

    • The topical 40% solution is used to treat patients with seborrheic keratoses.

Hydrogen Peroxide Antiseptic Solution Dose in Adults

Hydrogen Peroxide Antiseptic Solution Dose as Antiseptic; minor dermal abrasion:

  • Topical solution (3%) and spray (3%):
    • Apply a small amount to the affected areas one to three times a day.

Hydrogen Peroxide Antiseptic Solution Dose in the Removal of oral secretions:

  • Topical solution (3%):
    • The solution is diluted and swished around the oral cavity over the affected area for one minute and spit out.

Warnings and precautions

  • Dermatologic reactions

    • It has been reported that it can cause local reactions when used to treat seborrheic Keratosis.
    • There are many skin reactions that can occur, ranging from mild to severe. Scarring, vesiculation and erosions are all possible signs of severe reactions.
    • Patients with seborrheic Keratosis must wait for the lesions to dry before starting the second course.

How to use Hydrogen Peroxide Antiseptic Solution?

Topical use for skin application:

  • Solution/spray (3%):
    • Avoid shaking the solution.
    • When opening the container, hold it away from the face.
    • Before applying the solution, clean the affected area.
    • After the application, let the solution dry and then cover the area with a sterile bandage until it has dried.
    • Concentrated solutions (greater than 3%) are irritants and must be diluted before use.
  • Solution (40%):
    • It is intended for topical use only. Oral, ophthalmic, or intravaginal use of the 40% solution should be avoided.
    • Before applying the solution over the lesions, wipe the area with an alcohol swab.
    • The affected areas should be uniformly covered by directly applying the solution in a circular motion.
    • Application over open and infected lesions should be avoided.
    • A clean absorbent wipe should be used to remove the excess solution from the surrounding skin. Tissue paper or paper towel should not be used.
    • The process should be repeated thrice one minute apart.

Topical use for Oral application:

  • It should be used as a topical solution. Avoid ingesting it.

Removal of oral secretions:

  • Solution (3%):
    • Mix the 3% solution with an equal amount of water. Swish around the oral cavity over the affected area for at least one minute and then spit it out.

  • Oral rinse (1.4%):
    • Swish around the mouth over the affected area for at least one minute, then spit out.
  • Gel (1.7%):
    • Apply the gel to the affected areas of the mouth and allow it to remain in place for at least one minute, then spit out.

Mechanism of action of Hydrogen Peroxide Antiseptic Solution:

  • It acts as an antiseptic by releasing water or oxygen to the tissue when it comes in contact with serum and tissue catalase.
