Lacrisert (Hydroxypropyl Cellulose) lubricates the eyes and increases the tear breakdown time. It is used in the treatment of patients with dry eye syndrome.

Moderate to severe dry eye syndromes:
- It is used for the treatment of moderate to severe dry eye syndromes, including:
- keratoconjunctivitis sicca (especially in patients with severe disease who remain symptomatic despite an adequate trial of artificial tear solutions);
- Exposure keratitis;
- Decreased corneal sensitivity, and
- Recurrent corneal erosions
- It is used for the treatment of moderate to severe dry eye syndromes, including:

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (Lacrisert) Dose in the treatment of moderate to severe dry eye syndromes:
- Ophthalmic:
- Insert once daily into the inferior cul-de-sac beneath the base of the tarsus.
- some patients may require twice-daily use.
Use in Children:
Refer to adult dosing.
Pregnancy Risk Category: N
- Hydroxypropylcellulose is biologically inert and cannot be metabolized. The drug was not absorbed by animals in animal reproduction studies after oral administration.
- It must be absorbed by the fetus and then pass through the placental barrier.
- It is safe to use during pregnancy and nursing.

Corneal abrasion:

- If blurred vision persists, or causing discomfort, the inserts can be removed.

How to administer Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (Lacrisert)?
- Insert into the inferior cul-de-sac of the eyes beneath the base of the tarsus (not in apposition to the cornea nor beneath the eyelid at the level of the tarsal plate).
Mechanism of action of Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (Lacrisert):
- It thickens and stabilizes the precorneal tears film.
- This prolongs tear film breakdown time.
- It protects and lubricates the eyes.
