Miconazole (Oravig) Oral - Uses, Dose, MOA, Brands, Side effects

Miconazole (Oravig) Oral tablet is used to treat mild candidal infections of the oral cavity and pharynx.

Oral Miconazole Uses:

  • for the therapeutic treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis, this drug can be used

Oral Miconazole Dose in Adults:

Treatment of mild oropharyngeal candidiasis with an oral dose of miconazole (Oravig)

  • Buccal tablet:
    • On a daily basis, a single tablet of 50 mg is applied to the canine fossa for 1 to 2 weeks.

Dose in Children:

Refer to adults' dosing.


Pregnancy Risk Factor C

  • After buccal application, there is very little systemic absorption. 
  • Nevertheless, episodes of adverse pregnancies have been seen in animal reproduction analysis.

Use during breastfeeding:

  • It is unknown whether the drug will be excreted into breastmilk. 
  • Systemic absorption after the buccal application is also minimal. 
  • It is recommended that breastfeeding mothers avoid using it.

Dose in Kidney Disease:

No dosage adjustment is necessary.

Dose in Liver disease:

Contraindications to Miconazole (Oravig):

Warnings and precautions

  • Hypersensitivity reactions

    • There have been reports of allergic reactions, including anaphylactic reactions.
    • Cross-sensitivity reactions can occur, so patients who have had an allergic reaction to any azole medication should be cautious.
  • Hepatic impairment

    • It has minimal systemic absorption after buccal application. However, patients with impaired liver function should not use it.

How to administer Miconazole (Oravig)?

Oral:

  • In cases of mild oropharyngeal candidiasis, oral pills are utilized.
  • After cleaning teeth in the morning, it is administered orally.
  • Drying the hands is necessary before inserting the pills.
  • Place the tablet's two sides on the gum tissue in the area above the incisor tooth.
  • For at least 30 seconds, the tablet is held over the top lip with mild pressure.
  • It could be more pleasant to place the rounded side of the tablet against the gum.
  • For every application, switch which side of the mouth you're using.
  • The pills must not be eaten, crushed, or ingested.
  • It is best to refrain from chewing gum while the pill is in place.
  • The pill should be repositioned if it does not cling to the gums correctly or comes loose within six hours after administration.
  • If the tablet doesn't stick to the gum, it can be adjusted.
  • A new tablet should be used and the patient should be instructed to drink a cup of water if the tablet is consumed within six hours after administration (once only).
  • The dose should not be repeated if the pill is ingested or comes off after six hours of application; instead, a fresh tablet may be taken at the subsequent scheduled time.

Mechanism of action of Oral Miconazole (Oravig):

It causes damage to fungal cell walls and inhibits the synthesis ergosterol. This increases the permeability of cells, resulting in nutrients leaking from fungal cells.
