Ofloxacin eye drops and eye ointment are used to treat bacterial infections of the eye caused by susceptible bacterial organisms.

Bacterial conjunctivitis:
- Used or treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus epidermidis, , Enterobacter cloacae, Haemophilus influenzae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Corneal ulcer:
- Treatment of corneal ulcers caused by S.aureus, S.epidermidis, S.pneumoniae, P.aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens & Cutibacterium acnes.
Ofloxacin eye drops Dose in Adults
Ofloxacin eye drops Dose in the treatment of Bacterial conjunctivitis:
- Ophthalmic:
- In affected eye(s), instill 1 to 2 drops every 2 to 4 hours for the first 2 days, then instill 1 to 2 drops 4 times every day for an additional 5 days.
Ofloxacin eye drops Dose in the treatment of Corneal ulcer:
- Ophthalmic:
- in the affected eye(s), instill 1 to 2 drops every half an hour while awake and every 4 to 6 hours after retiring for the first 2 days.
- Beginning on day 3, instill 1 to 2 drops every hour while awake for 4 to 6 additional days.
- Thereafter, 1-2 drops 4 times every time until clinical cure.

- Thereafter, 1 to 2 drops 4 times daily until the clinical cure is achieved

Pregnancy Risk Factor C
- Some adverse events were observed in animal reproduction studies.
- Orally administered Ofloxacin crosses into the placenta (Giamarellou 1989).
- Topical application of the drops of ophthalmic medication is less effective than oral doses.
- To reduce potential exposure to the foetus, pregnant women should use the minimum effective dose of ophthalmic agent.
- This is combined with punctual occlusion for 3-5 minutes after application.
Ofloxacin eye drops use during breastfeeding:
- When administered orally, ofloxacin can enter breast milk.
- It is unknown if ofloxacin is found in breast milk after ophthalmic applications.
- Manufacturer recommends that you decide whether to stop nursing or discontinue using the drug.
- This is taking into consideration the importance of mother's treatment, as there are potential adverse reactions in nursing infants.

- In the manufacturer’s labeling, there are no dosage adjustments provided.
- However, dosage adjustment unlikely due to low systemic absorption.

Contraindication to Ofloxacin Eye Drops and Ointment:
- Hypersensitivity to ofloxacin or other quinolones or any component in the formulation
Warnings and precautions

Hypersensitivity reactions
- Anaphylaxis, anaphylactic shock, and rare severe hypersensitivity reactions (some fatal) have been reported with systemic quinolone treatment (some after the first dose).
- Some reactions can be accompanied by angioedema (laryngeal pharyngeal or facial edema), cardiovascular failure, dyspnea and loss of consciousness. Stop using the treatment if you experience an allergic reaction.

Superinfection
- Long-term use can lead to fungal and bacterial superinfections.
- If superinfection is suspected, you can initiate appropriate alternative treatment.

Tendon rupture and inflammation
- Tendon inflammation and rupture have been reported after taking systemic quinolone anti-biotics.
- The exposure following ophthalmic administration will be significantly lower than that after systemic therapy.
- Stop immediately if you feel any tendon inflammation or pain.
Monitoring parameters:
Monitor response to treatment and superimposed fungal infections in chronic users.
How to administer Ofloxacin eye drops and ointment?
- Use only for ophthalmic, not for injection.
- Avoid touching fingers, the tip of the applicator to the eye, or other surfaces.

- Ofloxacin acts as a DNA gyrase inhibitor.
- DNA gyrase, an essential bacterial enzyme, is responsible for maintaining the DNA's superhelical structure.
- DNA gyrase is essential for DNA transcription, replication, recombination and transposition.
Absorption:
- After ophthalmic instillation, only small amounts are absorbed systemically.
