Uribel Tablets - Uses, Dose, Side effects, MOA, Brands

Uribel is a combination of Methenamine, sodium biphosphate, phenyl salicylate, methylene blue, and hyoscyamine. It is used to relieve irritative bladder symptoms associated with urinary tract infection or local diagnostic procedures.

Methenamine, sodium biphosphate, phenyl salicylate, methylene blue, and hyoscyamine Uses:

  • It is indicated for the treatment of irritative symptoms when voiding;
  • It is also used for the relief of local symptoms associated with urinary tract infections and the relief of urinary tract symptoms caused by diagnostic urologic procedures.

Uribel Dose in Adults:

  • One tablet administered orally 4 times a day (It should be followed by liberal fluid intake)

Uribel Dose in Childrens:

  • Children >6 years:

    • Oral: Individualize the dose. Refer to adult dosing.

Pregnancy Risk Factor C

  • This combination has not been used in animal reproduction studies.
  • Methenamine and hyoscyamine cross the placental barrier (see individual agents)

Methenamine, sodium biphosphate and phenyl salticylate are all available for breastfeeding.

  • Breast milk contains hyoscyamine and methenamine.
  • It is recommended that you use it with caution if you are lactating.

Uribel Dose in Kidney disease:

  • There are no dosage adjustments provided in the manufacturer's labeling.
  • It should be used with caution as it contains methenamine that is contraindicated in advanced renal impairment.
  • However, the methenamine quantity (in mg) is very less compared to the single ingredient.

Uribel Dose in Liver disease:

  • There are no dosage adjustments provided in the manufacturer's labeling.
  • It should be used with caution in patients with advanced liver disease.
  • Methenamine is contraindicated in advanced liver disease.
  • However, the combination product contains very little amount compared to the single ingredient.

Side effects of Uribel:

  • Cardiovascular:

    • Flushing
    • Tachycardia
  • Central nervous system:

    • Dizziness
  • Gastrointestinal:

    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Xerostomia
  • Genitourinary:

    • Acute urinary retention
    • Difficulty in micturition
    • Urine discoloration (blue)
  • Ophthalmic:

    • Blurred vision
  • Respiratory:

    • Dyspnea

Contraindications to Uribel(Methenamine, sodium biphosphate, phenyl salicylate, methylene blue, and hyoscyamine):

  • Hypersensitivity to methenamine or hyoscyamine, or any other component of the formulation.

Notice: Hyoscyamine and methenamine contraindications may also be applicable

Warnings and precautions

  • Belladonna alkaloid allergy:

    • Patients who have a history of intolerance or hypersensitivity to belladonna alkaloids need to be cautious.
  • Blurred vision

    • The treatment should be stopped if the patient has blurred vision.
  • Dizziness:

    • If dizziness develops, the treatment should be stopped.
  • Salicylate allergy

    • Patients who have a history of intolerance should be cautious when using salicylates.
  • Tachycardia

    • If tachycardia develops, the treatment should be stopped immediately.
  • Cardiovascular disease

    • It should be used with caution for patients with cardiovascular disease like those who are at high risk of heart attack, heart failure, coronary disease, mitral stenosis, or cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Gastrointestinal tract obstruction:

    • It can reduce intestinal motility. Patients with obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract should not use it.
  • Glaucoma:

    • Glaucoma patients should be advised to avoid it.
  • Myasthenia gravis:

    • Patients suffering from myasthenia gravis need to be cautious.
  • Obstructive Uropathy:

    • Patients with urinary obstructions such as bladder neck obstruction and prostatic hyperplasia should not use it.

Monitoring Parameters:

  • Monitor for anticholinergic side effects including cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Observe for the clinical features of intestinal obstruction such as nausea, abdominal pain, and bloating.

How to administer Uribel?

Administer the drug two to four times a day without regard to meals or preferably after meals with plenty of water.
