Viscoat contains a combination of sodium hyaluronate 3% and chondroitin sulfate 4%. It is used as a Surgical aid in eye surgeries. It is widely used in phacoemulsification cataract surgeries to maintain an adequate intraocular space, stabilize the tissue and prevent the lens from injury caused by the surgical procedure.
Viscoat Dose in Adults
It is used as a Surgical aid: Intraocular:
Inject viscoat using a 27-gauge cannula into the anterior chamber before or following the removal of the crystalline lens. Additional doses may be required.
Viscoat Dose in Chlidrens
It is used as a Surgical aid: Intraocular:
Inject viscoat using a 27-gauge cannula into the anterior chamber before or following the removal of the crystalline lens. Additional doses may be required.
Pregnancy Risk Category C
- Although it has not been tested in pregnant women, it can be safely used as it only has local effects on the eyes.
Use during breastfeeding
- It can be used in lactating mothers.
Viscoat Dose in Renal Disease:
No adjustments in dose is required in patients with renal impairment
Viscoat Dose in Liver Disease:
No dose adjustments is required in patients with liver disease
Side Effects of Viscoat include
- Ophthalmic:
- Increased intraocular pressure may result
Contraindication to Viscoat (Chondroitin sulfate-sodium hyaluronate) include:
The manufacturer's labeling does not contain any contraindications.
Warnings and Precautions
- It is possible to experience allergic reactions.
- If the instructions for assembly of the cannula or cannula locking rings are not followed, serious injury to the eyes may occur.
Monitoring Parameters:
Monitor the intraocular pressure before and after the procedure.
How to administer Viscoat (Chondroitin sulfate-sodium hyaluronate)?
- Viscoat should be used for the intraocular purpose only. It may be injected in the anterior segment of the eye before or after the removal of the crystalline lens.
- Instillation of viscoat injection before removing the lens provides additional protection to the corneal endothelium and protects it from damage arising from surgical instrumentation.
- An additional solution may be injected during anterior segment surgery to fully maintain the solution lost during surgery.
- The solution should be removed by thoroughly irrigating and aspirating it with a sterile solution at the end of surgery.
Mechanism of action of Chondroitin sulfate-sodium hyaluronate:
It is an ophthalmic viscosurgical device that modulates the interactions between adjacent tissues by creating a space, stabilizing the tissue, balancing pressure, and protecting the corneal endothelial cells during surgery
