Alomide (Lodoxamide tromethamine) - Uses, Dose, Side effects, MOA

Alomide (Lodoxamide tromethamine) is a mast cells stabilizer that inhibits the immediate type of hypersensitivity reactions. It is used as eye drops for the treatment of patients with keratitis and keratoconjunctivitis.

  • Ocular disorders:

    • It is used for the Treatment of ocular disorders such as vernal keratoconjunctivitis, vernal conjunctivitis, and vernal keratitis.

How to administer Lodoxamide tromethamine (Alomide)?

  • It is intended for topical ophthalmic use only, not for injection.
  • Wash hands before use. Avoid contamination by not touching the tip of the dropper to the eyelids, eyes, or other surfaces when placing the eye drops.
  • Remove contact lenses before instilling the drops and wait for 15 minutes or longer before reinserting the lenses.

Mechanism of action of Lodoxamide tromethamine (Alomide):

  • It acts as a mast cell stabiliser and inhibits in vivo type 1 immediate hypersensitivity reactions. 
  • It reduces cutaneous vascular permeability in response to IgE or antigen-mediated reactions, as is the case with type 1 immediate hypersensitivity reactions.
