Sclerodex contains 25% dextrose and 10% sodium chloride. It is used as a sclerosing agent for the treatment of varicose veins of the smaller veins and their communicating branches.
Dextrose 25% and sodium chloride 10% Uses:
- Sclerosing agent:
- It is a mild sclerosing agent and is used as a local treatment of varicose veins as an adjunct to surgery.
- It is especially recommended for smaller vessels and communicating veins of the superficial venous system.
Sclerodex (Dextrose 25% and sodium chloride 10%) Dose in Adults
Sclerodex Dose as a Sclerosing agent:
- 0.1 to 1 mL administered intravenously (depending on the length and size of the vein) per injection site. Do not exceed a cumulative dose of 10 mL per visit.
Use in Children:
Not indicated.
Preganancy Risk Category: C
- Its use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not known.
- It is best to delay elective procedures, such as the treatment for varicose veins, until after the birth.
- The gravid uterus can cause varicosity in the veins of lower limbs to worsen during pregnancy.
Dose in Kidney Disease:
There are no dosage adjustments provided in the manufacturer’s labeling.
Dose in Liver disease:
There are no dosage adjustments provided in the manufacturer’s labeling.
Side effects of Sclerodex:
- There are no adverse reactions listed in the manufacturer's labeling.
- Observe for allergic reactions and thrombosis of the veins.
- Pulmonary embolism may occur.
- Patients may develop features of fluid overload especially in the background of impaired cardiac and renal functions.
Contraindication to Sclerodex (Dextrose 25% and sodium chloride 10%):
- Patients suffering from deep or superficial thrombophlebitis (active within the last 6 months or 2 years);
- Varicose veins are secondary to pelvic or abdominal malignancies.
- Patients suffering from underlying arterial disease
- Venous stasis and dilatation due to impaired renal or cardiac function
- Angina pectoris
- Local and systemic infections
- Hyperthyroidism;
- Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus
Warnings and precautions
- Hypersensitivity
- Allergies can range from mild to severe and may affect patients. Hypersensitivity reactions should be monitored.
- Thromboembolism
- Patients with a history or risk of developing deep vein thrombosis, such as those who use oral contraception, should be cautious about taking the drug.
- Pulmonary embolism can occur from DVT. Patients who have had DVT in the past 6 months to 2 year should not use it.

How to administer Sclerodex (Dextrose 25% and sodium chloride 10%)?
- It is indicated for intravenous use only.
- Extravasation into the extracellular space should be avoided as it may cause necrosis and ischemia of the local tissue.
- The injection should be separated by at least 2 inches.
Mechanism of action of Sclerodex:
- It is a chemical irritation that causes endothelial injury by direct caustic destruction.
- Fibrosis of the vessel endothelium results from the inflammatory process.
- It is a weak agent that can be used to treat varicose veins in the smaller blood vessels.
